2.     Mission and objectives

The PYC was established in 1996 and is an autonomous non-governmental organisation (NGO) that aims to effectively represent territorial and youth edit organisations on policies and issues of concern to youth in the Pacific.

     1. Assist in the promotion of a collective voice and action issues of concern to young people in the Pacific;
     2. Promote, at all levels, a regional youth identity which is sensitive to the spiritual, cultural, social, economic and political diversities of the PYC member Countries;
     3. Enhance the common aspirations and welfare of Pacific youth;
     4. Create a greater awareness and appreciation of issues affecting Pacific youth;
     5. Foster goodwill and solidarity among Pacific youth;
     6. Promote a global understanding of issues affecting Pacific youth;
     7. Monitor prevailing and emerging Territorial, National and Regional Youth Issues and assist member Countries in developing appropriate programmes to address such issues; and
     8. Foster co-operation between non-government youth organisations in the Pacific with governmental, regional and international organisations to promote engagement and development.

Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) and AusAID Pacific Leadership Program provide support for the hosting of the PYC secretariat. FIJI Water, TFL, UNFPA, Youth Forum Jeunesse, Niu Wave Media, UNESCO

6.     Successful youth employment interventions

a) In accordance with the PYC constitution, the General Assembly must take place every 3 years and this has continued to be a major challenge for the Council but nevertheless the Council has managed to host 4 Assemblies since 1996:
     1. The 1st PYC General Assembly was held in Noumea, New Caledonia in 1996
     2. The 2nd PYC General Assembly was held in Nadi, Fiji 2000.
     3. The 3rd PYC General Assembly was held in Papeete, French Polynesia, July, 2006.
     4. The  4th Pacific Youth Council General Assembly was held in Suva, July 2009.
