Research : EDUCATION AND EMPLOYMENT: SRI LANKA AT THE CROSSROADS
9th International Conference on Sri Lanka Studies Full Paper Number 031 - Sri Lanka is a nation ready to focus on the realization of dreams deferred. As one takes stock of this hopeful Sri Lanka, the relationship between the educational system and the labour market offers either the promise of human capital for an economic renaissance or an impediment to recovery; a source of inefficiency and unrest. With over half a million students annually preparing for the “O” Level examination, less than a third move on to “A” Level and about two percent are offered university seats. Evidence suggests that the labor market has struggled to accommodate this influx of new workers where unemployment rates hover at a staggering 30 percent. The stakes are significant. This paper reviews the transition from school to work in Sri Lanka, examines the issue of youth unemployment and underemployment, and looks at four current and potential interventions.
