EEA Case Study No. 1, 2007 - This case study, the first in a series generated by the Education and Employment Alliance, analyzes the groundbreaking use of Muslim philanthropy to promote the training and employment of disadvantaged young Muslim men and women. The study is based in Pakistan, where the Punjab Vocational Training Council (PVTC) has pioneered a way to channel Zakat funds, or obligatory Muslim philanthropy, to support an effective model of vocational technical training developed with the substantial involvement of the private sector. The study presents the lessons and the challenges of youth employment in Pakistan and demonstrates how a locally initiated method of using Zakat to support employability has responded to the demands of thousands of Pakistani young people.
