Research : Re-inventing Pathways for Youth Transitions to the World of Work in Asia and the Pacific Region
Discussions in this paper seek to focus on the status of youth unemployment, with focus on the rural youth, why rural youth unemployment exists and what can be done about it. Also discussed are the requirements for developing needed skills to re‐activate youth participation to economic activities through Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) and the available patterns of youth transitions and pathways. The paper emphasizes that education and training should be look into so as to ensure that it does not lose sight of the realities of the world of work. The integration of Tech‐Voc in school curriculum, delivery of modular skills development, entrepreneurship development and re‐orienting TVET for the informal sector are some of the major emerging trends that must be given due attention to be able to introduce some solutions to the youth‐oriented problems. The paper also revisits the key challenges and opportunities surrounding youth transitions, which need to be examined in an effort to usher new developments to move forward towards re‐inventing available pathways to increase the opportunities for successful transitions of the youth.
