The World Bank Summary Note: Key Findings, Options and Recommendations of the Youth Scoping Mission, 2008 - At the beginning of 2008 the Solomon Islands Government (SIG) identified youth as one of its six priority areas for medium-term development. The SIG subsequently requested the World Bank provide an analytical input to the development of a new youth strategy. In response to this request the World Bank fielded a mission that aimed to provide an initial overview of the situation of youth in the Solomon Islands today, and to identify options and opportunities for Government action and for World Bank engagement. This note summarizes the findings and preliminary recommendations of the mission.

ILO Suva office organised the first ever Pacific Islands Labour Ministers Conference, hosted in Port Vila, Vanuatu on 8th and 9th Feb 2010. The Conference resulted in the Port Vila statement and the Pacific Action Plan for Decent Work. Youth employment issues came out as a clear development priority in many of the Pacific Island countries.
The Vanuatu National Youth Council was re-established on October 29th 2009. The Vanuatu YEP supported this new institution with strategic planning workshops.
In August 2008, the Pacific YEP introduced the Training for Rural Economic Empowerment methodology (TREE) in Vanuatu. Meetings and workshops were followed up with projects in two sites - one rural and one urban. Partners include Training Institutions, NGOs and youth groups.
Following endorsement from the senior level Partners Planning meeting, Vanuatu hosted a five day TREE methodology Training of Trainers workshop for YEP participants from seven countries, including Samoa, Tuvalu, Kiribati, Solomons, PNG, Fiji and Vanuatu.
This workshop laid the ground work for the following TREE pilot projects in Vanuatu.
Vanuatu YEP hosted TREE consultant Alex Gorham for a one week visit to gather local information to contextualize materials to be incorporated into the Pacific TREE manual.
Vanuatu YEP has piloted the TREE methodology with partners in two distinct locations - one in an urban setting just outside Port Vila and the second in a rural village called Hog Harbour. The Vanuatu TREE pilot demonstration includes working with vocational training providers as well as community groups.
