Research : Young people speak 2: a study of the lives of Ni-Vanuatu urban youth and the issues affecting them in Port Vila

— theme: Skills for Youth
— country: Vanuatu

The Vanuatu Young People’s Project (VYPP), based at the Vanuatu Cultural Centre, started in April 1997. The aim of the Project was to draw attention to young people in Vanuatu; to provide a forum for young people to speak about their lives and their perspectives, and to develop programs that target the needs of youth. With an estimated 59% of the population under 24 years of age and an additional 18% of the population between 15-24 years of age, Vanuatu’s overall population is very young. This young population combined with the very rapid socio-economic changes necessitates research to better understand the situation of youth, which is the core research of this project. Urban youth are a new and growing social, cultural, and demographic category, who will shape the future in distinctive ways.
