Project and Programme : Youth involvement in community development in Sri Lanka
Alcoholism is a major problem in Sri Lanka which leads to socio economic problems in the society. Alcoholism leads to many issues such as conflicts within the family, society, children’s education, poverty status, disturbance to community development name a few. The problem is grater amongst the poor and uneducated communities and in Sri Lanka in the rural and plantation sector. In order to address the issue the Government of Sri Lanka initiated many projects and in the plantation sector a project has been implimented under the Plantation Development project by the ministry of plantation industries with the assistance of the ADB and the plantation management companies. This project is implemented in most of the plantations.

The Plantation Human Development Trust Ratnapura region where I am working, We got the youth involve in the project activities and seen positive results as most of the youth have identify alcoholism is a major constrain to improve the quality of life of the plantation community. Series of work shops were carried out through the project and work shop on street drama, saw a grater enthusiasm amongst the youth. We intent to get the youth involvement in addressing not only the alcoholism problem but the other issues such as child labour, health related issues etc.
